Please share with us your personal passion for sailing: How has this love influenced your life and experiences? Life lessons from sailing: What key insights have you gained that you think apply to life?

I love sports that involve interaction with nature. Sailing is such a sport and has helped shape my awareness of life and my realisation that we are part of it. When you are surrounded by water and exposed to the elements, it can only deepen your connection to nature. Practicalities such as anticipating changes in wind direction or reacting to gusts whipping around a small island are some of the tasks in the sport that excite me.

A few years ago, friends introduced me to sailing, and I was hooked immediately. I began taking lessons in Hong Kong and found great joy in the skills and experience I gained. In fact, the act of sailing resonates with my recent study of Eastern philosophy and the life lessons I have learnt. Specifically, it illustrates the impermanence of life, where things change, there are no fixed plans, and one should simply go with the flow.

Inspiring young people: What motivates you to encourage the next generation to take up sailing?

I really do think it is a good sport and it is fundamentally different from others. The thought that more young people might see it for themselves would be fantastic. To see the harmony with nature sailing gives, a feeling of no control over the elements, the idea that sailing is a kind of meditation are such things that young people should be exposed to.

“I truly believe that our coastline is the best and most beautiful in Asia. Everyone interested in sailing should visit Hong Kong, just for that reason. It offers so much: beauty, variety, intensity, challenge, incredible seafood choices, solitude, and then suddenly, around a corner - an outcrop of skyscrapers!”

Tony LEUNG (HKG), actor, singer and Dragon sailor.

Sailing in HK: Could you share your experiences of sailing in our beautiful waters and the stunning natural surroundings?

Our coastline is the best and most beautiful in Asia. Everyone interested in sailing should visit Hong Kong, just for that reason. It offers so much: beauty, variety, intensity, challenge, incredible seafood choices, solitude, and then suddenly, around a corner - an outcrop of skyscrapers! I feel like - wow, I’m so lucky to live in this city. Every time I go out on the water, I experience a range of emotions, but they are always very positive.

Significance of the event: What does this Championship mean for a vibrant city like Hong Kong and for our nation as a whole?

An excellent opportunity for international sailors to explore and experience what Hong Kong has to offer!
